Exhibit and Veteran's Reception Honoring Madison County citizen, World War II veteran, and POW Don Thomas

Exhibit - May 23 through June 30

Reception - May 23, 6:00-7:00 pm

After growing up in Macksburg, Iowa, Don joined the Marines and was a survivor of Japanese prison camps after the capture of Corregidor 75 years ago.  Upon returning to Iowa, Don attended Central College where he met his wife Jean, and  spent the rest of his life in Winterset, where he taught art in the schools, raised his family, and became a leader in his community.

The traveling exhibit will feature war documents including letters and telegrams, as well as Don's legacies:  his artwork, his POW stories, and tributes to the Winterset Art Center and George Washington Carver Park, which he co-founded.

Don's biography booklet The Wrigley Peace Pact will be given away while supplies last, courtesy of his family.  Donations are welcome to help fund scholarships for children's art classes at the Winterset Art Center, a tradition that meant so much to Don.

Thanks to Mr. Jim Heithoff's 7th grade History students, the Winterset Art Center, the Madison County Historical Society, and the American Legion Auxiliary for their support and partnership with the Library.

Grand Re-Opening    Thank you to everyone who attended our "Grand Re-Opening" on Saturday.  It was a wonderful day!  Thank you to all of the Friends of the Winterset Public Library who provided delicious cookies and bars and for hosting this special occasion.  We want to wish Sue Hansen and Sherri Briney a big thank you for providing such beautiful music for the event.  The photos of the Re-Opening are in the photo carousel below.
